Keeping Your Kids Safe on the Internet

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Your kids are online. And more than likely, you probably aren’t aware of what they are doing online. You’re not up to speed on MySpace (frankly, something that I just don’t get but, I do have a page on MySpace), Instant messaging (which can be a great substitute for high cell phone or long distance bills), file-sharing, or anything else that is “hip” with the kids these days. (Yes, I just used the term “hip”. Be glad it wasn’t “rad” or “awesome”.)

It’s ok for your kids to be online. Don’t think that by preventing them access to the internet that you are going to protect them from the evil that lurks in the dark places frequented by strange, middle-age men that never see the light of day and play online role-playing games for 30 or 40 hours straight. Don’t think that by blocking access to the internet that you kids are going to be just the most wonderful little children and stay away from the evil Internet even when they are not at home. (more…)

JAP: Anonymity and Privacy on the Internet

Friday, April 27th, 2007

JAP enables anonymous web surfing with any browser through the use of integrated proxy services that hide your real IP address. The service uses a proxy mix cascade that effectively hides the identity of any one single user among the connections of all the other users - making it impossible, even for the proxy provider, to determine which IP belongs to which user.

After installing JAP, you need to configure your browser to use the local proxy server (instructions provided) for web browsing. The provided control panel allows you to turn anonymity on or off, and also dispays the current level of security. JAP comes pre-configured with several free service providers and also supports pay services. The free services are run by universities and other public infrastructures and are free of charge for the user. (more…)

Major Anti-Spam Lawsuit Filed in Virginia

Friday, April 27th, 2007

A company representing Internet users in more than 100 countries today filed a lawsuit in Virginia seeking the identity of individuals responsible for harvesting millions of e-mail addresses on behalf of spammers.

The suit was filed in U.S. District Court in Alexandria on behalf of Project Honey Pot , a service of Unspam Technologies LLC, a Utah-based anti-spam company that consults with private companies and government agencies.

The lead attorney on the case, Jon Praed of the Arlington, Va.-based Internet Law Group, has represented America Online and Verizon Online in successful cases against junk e-mailers. Praed said the group hopes to follow the trail from the people doing the harvesting of e-mail addresses to the actual spammers. (more…)
